EDUCATE YOUNG GIRLS
To educate a girl is to build a healthier family, a stronger community, and a brighter future.
To educate a girl is to build a healthier family, a stronger community, and a brighter future.
We believe in an equal world where each girl is educated and empowered to thrive in her community and achieve her full potential in all aspects of her life.
Our mission is to increase school enrollment and retention for girls in Cameroon, while empowering teenage mothers through vocational training and financial independence. We aim to shift societal mindsets to better understand, support, and prioritize girls’ education. Through awareness campaigns, reproductive health education, vocational education, and community engagement, we work to reduce dropout rates and teenage pregnancies, creating lasting change that breaks the cycle of poverty and fosters both personal and economic growth for girls and young women.
What happens when an 18-year-old girl, with nothing but a dream and determination, decides to change the future for girls in her community?
Educate Young Girls was founded by Yougang Tahon Glory Divine, a determined young Cameroonian girl whose vision and passion have shaped the organization’s mission to empower girls through education.
Growing up in Cameroon, Glory witnessed firsthand the harsh realities faced by many girls in her community. One such moment stood out—when, at 10 years old, she went to fetch water at a neighbor’s house and met a girl her age, Omu, who was illiterate. Omu was married off at just 12 years old, denied an education, and forced into early adulthood. This encounter made a lasting impact on our founder, who realized that her own path could have easily been the same, had it not been for the scholarship that allowed her to continue her education.
Driven by the desire to make a difference, Glory took action. In her first year of college at Smith College, with the boldness and determination of an 18-year-old girl, she founded Educate Young Girls, determined to ensure that no girl in Cameroon would ever face the same fate as Omu. Our mission became clear: to educate girls in Cameroon, with the ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of poverty through increased access to education, vocational training, and resources for girls and young mothers.
What began as a small initiative in her community quickly grew into a movement for change. Educate Young Girls was legally registered in Cameroon in 2022, and in April 2024, it became a fiscally sponsored organization in the USA. Today, we continue to work tirelessly to support girls’ education through awareness campaigns, one-on-one conversations with parents, free school kits, scholarships, literacy and vocational training for teenage mothers, and reproductive health education.
Our founder’s journey is a testament to the power of vision and resilience. It is our belief that with education, every girl has the potential to create a better future for herself, her family, and her community.
