THE PROBLEM

To educate a girl is to build a brighter future. Unfortunately today, more than 3 million girls from 10 to 19 years old in Cameroon are not in school.

It is alarming that only 20% of girls in Cameroon complete secondary school. We know that countries with more girls in secondary school tend to have lower maternal
mortality rates, lower infant mortality rates, lower rates of HIV/AIDS, and better child
nutrition. Depriving girls from education is keeping them in a cycle of poverty. Below are the
major root causes we have uncovered for this problem in Cameroon.

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED

During our previous work in various communities in Cameroon, we have learned that the
main reasons why girls in Cameroon are not educated are:

scholarize a girl

COST:

Schooling is a right in Cameroon, but education is not free. With half of Cameroonians living on less than two dollars a day, according to the World Bank, few families can afford school tuition and fees. Poorer families tend to prioritize investing in the education of boys over girls. Give to scholarize a girl and make a difference.

Teenage pregnancy

TEENAGE PREGNANCIES:

23.4% of girls in Cameroon are held back in their studies because of early pregnancy. Pregnant girls often drop out of school, limiting opportunities for future employment and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

Child Marriage

CHILD MARRIAGE:

31% of girls are married off before 18 with 10.7 % married before the age of 15, scoring the 8th highest marriage rate before 15 in Africa. Girls often abort their education and dreams after marriage as new responsibilities awaits them.
