Our outreach program in the community of Batouri in Cameroon was a resounding success, with
a focus on addressing the challenges faced by young girls in the community. The community of
Batouri has been grappling with a high rate of girls’ non-education due to issues such as child
marriage and teenage pregnancies. So, we knew it was crucial to provide support and resources
to empower these young girls.
Throughout the outreach program, we were able to impact over 150 young girls, including
disabled young girls who are often marginalized in society. We distributed reading materials,
books, school supplies, and even awarded prizes to the top three girls in national exams in the
community to encourage academic excellence.
The program featured representatives from five ministries and experts in the field, who led
discussions on the importance of education, sexual education, and strategies to overcome the
barriers to girls’ education. We held four sessions, starting with emphasizing the importance of
girls’ education and followed by discussions on the challenges faced by young girls in the
community.
One of the key issues that were highlighted was the prevalence of child marriage and minor work
in gold mining areas, which hindered girls’ education. Our experts educated the girls on the
benefits of education and the various career paths available to them. Additionally, a specialist in
reproductive health provided valuable information on sexual education, contraception, and the
risks of clandestine abortions.
To conclude the outreach, we distributed free school kits and food to the girls, ensuring that they
have the necessary resources to continue their education. The event was a success not only
because of the valuable information provided but also because it brought together key
decision-makers who can implement lasting solutions for the girls in the community.
As a result of our outreach program, our organization was selected to represent and advocate for
girls’ education at the city council’s decision-making table by the mayor. The community’s
positive response and the mayor’s endorsement are a testament to the impact of our program.
According to the mayor, our program served as a strong encouragement for parents to prioritize
their daughters’ education.
Overall, our outreach program in the community of Batouri was a memorable and impactful
experience that will leave a lasting impression on the community, empowering young girls and
advocating for their right to education.
